The inventor of energy gels
Dr. Bill Vaughan — a biophysicist — created the first GU energy gel in the early 1990s in his kitchen in Berkeley, California. He developed it around 1993 to help his daughter, an ultramarathon runner, get needed nutrition during long races without stomach problems.
GU Energy gels are small, concentrated packets of carbohydrates that give you fast energy when you need it — especially during long runs, bike rides, or other endurance activities. They typically contain carbs, electrolytes, amino acids, and sometimes caffeine.
How they work:
-
Provide quick energy from carbohydrates
-
Include sodium to support hydration
-
Some contain caffeine for extra focus and endurance
-
Designed to be easy to digest during activity
